Investment partners for international clients
The firm advises on and coordinates the overall structure. Insurers issue the contracts, custodian banks hold the assets and asset managers operate the funds. Knowing which of them holds your money, and which merely advises on it, tells you who to call when something goes wrong.
Valley International advises on the overall arrangement and coordinates the file. The insurer issues the policy, the custodian holds the relevant assets and the manager makes the investment decisions within its mandate. Before subscribing, identify each party’s role, charges and reporting responsibilities, including how the adviser is paid.
Which institutions can accept a cross-border client
Residence and US tax status can restrict the providers and products available. Confirm acceptance for the proposed policy before preparing the full subscription, and review the tax consequences separately. Investing in France as a US citizen or green-card holder explains why provider acceptance is only one part of that decision.
Acceptance is not the same as tax efficiency
An insurer accepting you means your file will be underwritten. It says nothing about how the contract is taxed where you are a citizen. For a US person the two questions are separate, and both have to be answered before signing rather than after.
Luxembourg insurers
Four companies carry the Luxembourg life assurance and capitalisation contracts the firm arranges: Wealins, Vitis Life, OneLife and Lombard International Assurance, part of the Utmost group. All are authorised in Luxembourg and supervised by the Commissariat aux Assurances, which is what triggers the policyholder protection regime. Choosing between them is not a matter of preference: it depends on your country of residence, on the assets to be held, on the custodian bank required, and on the company’s own acceptance of the file, which remains its decision alone.
French insurers and platforms
The firm also works with French providers, including Vie Plus and Primonial, for policies and retirement arrangements. French PER retirement plans: tax deduction and later taxation explains the pension-plan questions. Compare the provider and product against the need, costs and residence conditions; a smaller investment does not automatically dictate one structure.
Custodian banks
Assets held inside a Luxembourg contract are kept by a custodian bank, separate from the insurer, and that separation is what underpins the protection. Depending on the file, the currency and the assets, the firm works mainly with Intesa, EFG and Swissquote, and with other institutions where the chosen company or the nature of the assets requires it. The custodian is not an administrative detail: it determines which currencies are available, which assets are admitted, the quality of reporting, and sometimes whether a non-resident file is accepted at all.
Property and unlisted assets
The firm’s property-fund relationships include MNK Partners, Alderan and Arkéa REIM; SCPI Valley provides a wider catalogue and comparisons. For unlisted investments, the named partners include Crosspoint, Openstone and Altaroc. The choice still depends on the specific fund’s strategy, charges, risks and suitability for the client.
The advisers we do not name
The firm coordinates with tax advisers, notaries and accountants according to the countries and the work required. Establish who advises on each issue, who prepares the documents and who files the returns. For a US taxpayer, the US filing remains with the appropriate tax preparer; the firm does not file that return.
Frequently asked questions
Which of your partners accept US persons?
Acceptance depends on the insurer, policy, residence and the full US tax profile. We establish which providers can consider the proposed file, then coordinate the documents needed for review. Acceptance does not establish the US tax treatment of the investment.
Why do so many European insurers refuse Americans?
Because carrying a US person brings reporting and compliance obligations under the US rules that apply to foreign financial institutions, and some companies decide the volume does not justify the process. The refusal is commercial rather than legal, which is why it varies from one company to the next and why it is worth knowing in advance who accepts rather than discovering it after a file has been prepared.
Is the firm paid by these partners?
The firm can receive remuneration from providers as well as charge fees, depending on the service and product. How we are paid, and what it costs explains the model. Ask for the terms applying to your proposed arrangement before committing.
Can I ask for a particular insurer or bank?
You can ask, and it will be considered, but the decision is not entirely the firm’s. An insurance company remains sovereign over whether it accepts a file, particularly according to your country of residence and nationality, and not every company works with every custodian bank. Residence, nationality and the assets to be held may narrow the available list before personal preference is considered.
Who deals with my US tax return?
You do, through your own US tax agent. The division of labour is precise and worth knowing before you sign: the insurer and the other partners issue the statements and certificates relating to the policy, and you take those documents to the person who files your American return. The firm does not file on the US side and does not act as your US tax preparer. What the firm can do is make sure the documents you receive are the ones your preparer will ask for.
Why do you not name your tax lawyers and notaries?
Because they are chosen file by file, according to the country involved, the subject and the working language, and publishing a list would suggest an exclusivity that does not exist. The firm never gives a legal or tax opinion in place of a regulated professional: it identifies the question, coordinates, and introduces you where that is useful.
