French long-stay visitor visa: financial and tax implications

A French long-stay visitor visa requires evidence of resources and an undertaking not to work. The way those resources are held can also affect tax residence, investment access and later reporting.

The visitor long-stay route is intended for a stay without professional activity in France. The application requires evidence of sufficient resources and appropriate health cover, among other documents. The visa issued and any validation or renewal steps depend on the file. Use the current France-Visas checklist for your circumstances. Tax residence is assessed separately under article 4 B and the applicable treaty.

A visa authorises a stay; it does not alone determine tax residence or its start date. French tax residence under Article 4 B explains the analysis. Review it alongside the immigration application so that the intended way of living and working is considered in both.

Two administrations reading the same facts

The undertaking not to work and the professional-activity test of article 4 B examine the same conduct from different angles, and a household can satisfy one while failing the other. Managing your own securities portfolio is ordinarily the administration of private wealth rather than professional activity. Running a rental business at scale, with staff or continuous commercial operation, drifts towards activity.

Keeping executive control of a company abroad — signing, directing, deciding from your desk in France — raises three problems at once: it sits badly with the visitor undertaking, it can constitute professional activity carried on in France under article 4 B, and it exposes the company itself to a claim that its place of effective management has moved.

If you intend to run a business or continue professional work, ask which residence route permits it. If you are stopping work, document what will actually change in your responsibilities. Resigning a title without changing the activity is not a substitute for assessing the facts.

What proving your resources does to a portfolio

Prepare evidence of the resources available to support your stay, using the consulate’s current list. Pension income, savings and other resources should be documented in the form requested. Do not sell or replace investments merely on the assumption that only a regular distribution is acceptable. Retiring in France with a US, Canadian or Australian pension explains the wider financial review.

Consider the household budget beyond the first year, including renewals. If you will draw on capital, show how the available funds support the planned spending. Compare any investment changes on their merits and tax consequences rather than treating recurring income as the only possible answer.

Health cover, before and after

Check the health-insurance evidence required for the application and the terms of the cover. Eligibility for French healthcare is a separate process, with its own start date. A portable entitlement may apply in some circumstances. French healthcare and social security for new residents explains the distinction between rights, registration and the carte Vitale.

The order we work in

We review the activity you plan to continue, the resources available and any transactions you are considering. Immigration advisers determine the appropriate status; we examine the financial consequences before and after the move. Planning your move to France and Opening a French bank account and transferring your money provide the related checklists.

The undertaking not to work

Describe the work you will actually perform from France, including management decisions, consulting and signing authority. Have the proposed activity checked against the visitor conditions, your personal tax residence and any consequences for the company. Keep records of changes in responsibilities.

This page describes the structure of the visitor route and the French tax rules it interacts with. It states no resource threshold, no fee and no processing time: those are set administratively, revised, and assessed by the consulate handling your file at the date of your application, which is where they must be verified. Immigration conditions change independently of tax law, and an immigration matter is handled by a lawyer qualified in that field, with whom we coordinate. Nothing here is investment advice or a personal tax recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I manage my own investments on a visitor visa?

Managing your own securities portfolio is ordinarily treated as administration of private wealth rather than as professional activity, so it does not by itself conflict with the visitor undertaking. The position changes with scale and organisation: trading as a business, running a rental operation with staff, or managing assets for others are activities rather than administration. The distinction is one of fact, and a household near the line should have it examined before applying rather than at renewal.

Does the visitor visa make me a French tax resident?

No. Tax residence depends on the domestic tests and applicable treaty, including the actual home, activity and economic interests. The visa and tax analysis may concern the same facts, but they are separate decisions.

How much income do I need to show?

Use the current official checklist for your application and household. Ask which evidence of income, savings or other resources is required. A large portfolio is not a substitute for documents, but the absence of regular distributions does not by itself establish insufficient resources.

Can I keep my company directorship abroad?

It is possible, and it deserves examination first. An active directorship exercised from France can amount to professional activity carried on in France for the purposes of article 4 B of the French tax code, sits uneasily with the visitor undertaking, and can support an argument that the company is effectively managed from France. A non-executive holding with no signature power and no decision-making from France is a different position from a mandate you actually exercise.

What happens at renewal if I have been living on capital?

Prepare evidence that the remaining resources can support the continued stay under the applicable conditions. Drawing on capital should be included in the budget and supporting documents. Do not restructure investments solely on an assumed requirement for recurring income.
