Tax and wealth planning for UNESCO staff based in Paris
If your UNESCO career has taken you through several countries, your accounts and family arrangements may reflect more than one posting. We review what you hold, your current residence and the next move you are considering.
A move to UNESCO headquarters may leave accounts or property in previous duty stations. Start with an inventory and a dated residence history. The organisation’s pension and benefit records also belong in the file; several postings do not necessarily mean several pension schemes. International organisation staff in France: what remains taxable introduces the wider tax questions.
The trail a mobile career leaves
Each move requires the same three points to be reviewed: what happens to the accounts and policies left in the previous country, what the new country will tax, and what the move does to the position you were building. A record made at each move is easier to use than a position reconstructed many years later, after some planning options may have closed.
French residence, when Paris is a return rather than an arrival
Whether Paris is a first arrival or a return, use the actual residence history. Some reliefs require a defined period of previous non-residence. A new contract or a posting abroad does not by itself prove that condition. Retain the documents showing where the family lived and how residence was determined.
What deserves attention before the last posting ends
If you are considering several retirement destinations, compare the expected net pension, healthcare, housing and family needs in each. Include the accounts and property you would retain elsewhere. A preference for one country is a valid starting point; the financial review helps you understand its consequences.
Frequently asked questions
I have accounts in three countries from previous postings. Is that a problem?
Holding accounts in several countries is not inherently a problem. Keep a complete list and check the French reporting rules for each, including dormant accounts and any exception. Confirm that each provider can continue serving your current residence.
Does my time in previous duty stations count for French reliefs?
A previous posting can be relevant, but the test concerns your actual tax residence rather than the duty-station label alone. Check the period and conditions for each relief using the dated history and supporting records.
Where should I retire after a career like this?
Start with where you want to live and the family’s needs, then compare income after tax, healthcare and housing. The organisation’s pension can be treated differently between countries. The review should inform the choice, not assume tax is the only reason to make it.
